The employment of Junior Border Guards at the country’s ports of entry is already yielding significant results, bolstering national security, and providing valuable employment opportunities for young people, according to the Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr. Michael Masiapato.

Speaking ahead of Youth Day this weekend, Dr. Masiapato highlighted the "outstanding benefits of youth employment" in the Junior Border Guards program. These young recruits have been effective in making substantial interceptions at ports of entry, demonstrating their commitment and capability in safeguarding the nation.

During a border law enforcement operation on 11 June 2024, Junior Border Guards at the Lebombo Port of Entry intercepted a considerable amount of counterfeit alcohol hidden in a minibus taxi, which was concealed under bags of coal and packs of lettuce. The following day, they intercepted counterfeit clothing and shoes hidden in another minibus taxi's trailer and in a bakkie filled with vegetables. Both vehicles were traveling from Mozambique, attempting to smuggle the goods illegally. The intercepted goods were handed over to customs for further processing.

Dr. Masiapato emphasized the positive impact that the Junior Border Guards have brought to border law enforcement, highlighting the significant return on investment that youth employment brings to society. He praised the young recruits for their rigorous training and dedication to national security, noting that their efforts have been crucial in disrupting illegal activities and protecting the borders.

“As we celebrate Youth Month, the Junior Border Guards continue to play a pivotal role in enhancing the effectiveness of our border security measures. These young recruits, equipped with rigorous training and a commitment to safeguarding our nation, have been instrumental in making massive interceptions that have disrupted illegal activities and protected our borders," he said.

Dr. Masiapato also underscored the broader role of the BMA, which encompasses areas such as immigration, port health, environmental and agricultural biosecurity, access control, and general law enforcement at the ports of entry and border law enforcement areas. The BMA remains dedicated to protecting the 71 ports of entry while facilitating the legitimate movement of goods and people.

The Commissioner expressed optimism about the continued success and contributions of the Junior Border Guards, reflecting on their vital role in national security and their thriving performance in their duties.
