A special MCOCA court in Thane acquitted Iqbal Kaskar, brother of the notorious fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, in an extortion case on Wednesday.
Special MCOCA judge Amit M Shete ruled that Kaskar was given the benefit of the doubt, as the prosecution failed to substantiate the charges against him.
Kaskar faced charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and various sections of the Indian Penal Code related to extortion and threats, stemming from an October 3, 2017 case at Thane Nagar police station.
The prosecution accused Kaskar and others of threatening and extorting Rs 3 crore from a builder over a 38-acre land deal in north Mumbai's Gorai area. However, defence counsels Poonit Mahimkar and MZG Sheikh successfully contested the charges, leading to the acquittal.
After considering both sides, the court concluded that the evidence was insufficient to convict Kaskar, resulting in his acquittal.
