A senior European Union official warned the Georgian government on Thursday that proposed legislation on "foreign agents" was unacceptable and would be a serious obstacle to its hopes of joining the bloc if adopted.

Gert Jan Koopman, director general of the European Commission's enlargement directorate, was speaking to reporters in the Georgian capital.

Georgia's parliament on Wednesday approved the second reading of the bill on "foreign agents" that has been criticised as Kremlin-inspired, as police fired tear gas and stun grenades to clear a large crowd of protesters opposed to the draft law.
