A prime accused in a drug smuggling case has been arrested by Mumbai police at the international airport here, an official said on Wednesday. The Anti Extortion Cell of Mumbai Crime Branch nabbed Ali Asgar Shirazi on Monday when he was trying to flee to Dubai, he said.
Shirazi is a close aide of absconding drug smuggler Kailash Rajput, the official said.
Mumbai police had in March this year arrested seven persons in a crack-down on a ketamine smuggling syndicate. They had also seized some 23,000 Viagra tablets during the operation. Shirazi's role in the production and distribution of ketamine to meet the demand for the drug in European countries came to light, following which a Look-Out circular was issued against him, said the official.
After the arrest, he was produced before a court which sent him in police custody till June 1. The syndicate smuggled drugs to the US, UK and Australia, among other countries.
Employees of some professional courier companies are also under the scanner in the case, the official said.
