Kathmandu is poised for notable demonstrations this Friday, with pro-monarch and pro-republic factions staging protests at two different sites. The Socialist Front, featuring parties like the CPN-Maoist Center and CPN-Unified Socialist, will advocate for the republic at Bhrikutimandap, while a faction led by Durga Prasai seeks to resurrect the monarchy at Tinkune, near the airport.

The Kathmandu District Administration Office has sanctioned both gatherings, and a contingent of over 3,500 police officers will be positioned to uphold order. Expect traffic disruptions as both sides plan marches across multiple areas. Chief District Officer Rishiram Tiwari confirmed via phone that the Socialist Front's protest will occur at Bhrikutimandap and Prasai's demonstration at Tinkune.

Noteworthy areas such as Babarmahal, Kupondole, and New Road, among others, have been identified as gathering spots by the socialist coalition before heading to Bhrikuti Mandap. Conversely, Prasai's supporters will march from Sinamangal and Bhaktapur. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged a peaceful demonstration, underscoring the importance of adhering to constitutional and international legal standards.

NHRC spokesperson Tikaram Pokharel emphasized the necessity for protestors to remain peaceful and avoid infringing on others' rights. The commission also called upon authorities to handle the situation with sensitivity, stressing human rights while maintaining order. NHRC Chair Tap Bahadur Magar has been actively engaging with officials to prepare security arrangements, signaling the deployment of monitoring teams to observe the demonstrations.

These protests come on the heels of intensified efforts by pro-monarchists in Nepal to revive the monarchy, abolished in 2008. As tensions rise, the NHRC's involvement aims to ensure a balance between exercising free speech and maintaining public security.
