External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently addressed the evolving dynamics between India and China, marking a notable improvement in relations since the October 2020 border standoff. The minister was in conversation with Kyung-wha Kang of the Asia Society, where he elaborated on how both nations are working to mend bilateral ties that were severely strained.

Reflecting on the troubled history, Jaishankar pointed out that after the 1962 war, it took decades for diplomatic normalization. He emphasized that, since 1988, both countries have grown their relationship despite unresolved boundary issues. The recent strain, however, was exacerbated by the 2020 conflict in eastern Ladakh, which called for a military response from India.

Jaishankar stressed the importance of tackling differences without escalating them into disputes and maintaining competition without inciting conflict. Both nations have recently agreed on new patrolling arrangements along the LAC, fostering optimism for continued diplomatic dialogue. The anticipation of improved relations comes after Prime Minister Modi's recent discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, aiming for peaceful border resolutions.
