US Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by Second Lady Usha Vance, is set to visit the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland on Friday. This visit aims to brief the Vice President on Arctic security issues and engage with US service members, according to an announcement from the Office of the US Vice President on Tuesday.

The Pituffik Space Base, operated by the US Space Force's 821st Space Base Group, represents the northernmost installation of the US Department of Defence. It plays a pivotal role in missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance operations. Expressing anticipation for the visit, Vance shared on the social platform X that he looks forward to visiting Greenland.

In a video statement, Vance said, "I'm going to visit some of our guardians in the Space Force on the northwest coast of Greenland and also check out what is going on with the security there in Greenland." The visit underscores the longstanding strategic partnership between the United States and Greenland, which is crucial for national and economic security. The statement details historical military contexts, highlighting the establishment of military bases during World War II and the Cold War to defend strategic corridors against Nazi and Soviet threats.

The statement further critiqued past inactions by Danish and US leaders, asserting that adversaries have advanced their influence in Greenland. President Trump is noted for changing this course by renewing focus on Arctic priorities. The visit marks a shift from Second Lady Usha Vance's planned attendance at the Avannaata Qimussersu dogsled race to a focus on national security priorities at the Arctic outpost.
