The Knesset's Economic Affairs Committee has unanimously advanced plans for the construction of a new international airport near Beer-Sheva, set to dramatically impact Israel's aviation landscape. According to the bill, the airport will be established in Moshav Nevatim within seven years, designed to accommodate up to 15 million passengers annually. This strategic move is poised to bolster the economy of the Negev region, bringing significant new opportunities and development.

Dimona Mayor Benny Biton heralded the proposed airport as a transformative project for the neglected Negev area. 'The extensive backing for this legislation underscores the widespread acknowledgment that the Negev represents Israel's future growth engine,' said Biton. The project is projected to generate approximately 50,000 new jobs, with leaders emphasizing the necessity of this development to alleviate congestion at the overburdened Ben-Gurion International Airport.

However, not all parties are in favor. Israeli military officials have raised concerns over the planned airport's proximity to the Nevatim Air Force base. Meanwhile, efforts are also underway to extend the capacities of existing facilities like Ramon International Airport, which mainly serves domestic travel, and Haifa International Airport, upgraded recently to cater to regional demands.
