In a dramatic turn of events, South Korea's Constitutional Court has reinstated the impeached Prime Minister Han Duck-soo as acting president, according to Al Jazeera. The decision marks a significant moment in the nation's ongoing political instability, set into motion by the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol.
The court's panel of eight justices voted 7-1 against Han's impeachment, effectively restoring him to significant political power. This reversal addresses previous contentions that the impeachment did not garner the necessary two-thirds legislative support. Meanwhile, President Yoon's suspension remains in effect, following his brief imposition of martial law, Al Jazeera reports.
Prime Minister Han, who had previously been suspended for not filling vacant positions on the Constitutional Court, expressed gratitude towards the judgement and committed to addressing South Korea's pressing geopolitical issues. He stressed the importance of unity in a polarised political climate.
The court is also poised to make a critical decision on Yoon's impeachment, which has been under consideration since mid-December. At least six justices must support the impeachment for Yoon to be permanently removed from office, which would necessitate a quick presidential election. Facing serious criminal charges, Yoon could also encounter severe legal penalties if found guilty.
