Lawyer bodies in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit Baltistan have expressed strong opposition to a controversial land reform bill, deeming it illegal and detrimental to local rights, reports Pamir Times. At a meeting held at the Ghizer Press Club, lawyers called for the inclusion of both settled and unsettled communities before implementing the bill.
The bill, which is supported by Gilgit Baltistan representatives seeking to appease the government, permits government acquisition of lands without clear definitions of 'partible' and 'impartible' land, according to the lawyers. Criticism also targets the bill's immunity provision, which shields representatives from impeachment or accountability in case of improper land distribution.
Amid these concerns, bar associations, including the High Court and Supreme Court Bar Associations, announced a boycott of court proceedings until November 16. Pamir Times further reports the call for immediate amendments to safeguard public interests, particularly in unsettled areas, as lawyers criticize the appointment of planners unfamiliar with local jurisdiction.
