In a decisive move to address the escalating smog crisis, Lahore has announced a ban on outdoor activities from November 11 to 17, including sports and dining, though religious gatherings are exempt, as reported by ARY News. Shops and markets, however, must close by 8 PM, with some essential services allowed to operate beyond those hours.
Simultaneously, Islamabad is taking similar steps, shutting down smoke-emitting brick kilns and factories, and restricting vehicles that contribute to air pollution. Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Nawaz Memon has convened meetings with key officials for an air pollution crackdown, as the city grapples with hazardous smog levels.
Meanwhile, Lahore's growing infrastructure has been implicated in recent reports as worsening the smog situation. The expansion has decreased green spaces, turning the city into a 'heat island.' These conditions, fueled by industrial pollution close to residential zones, necessitate urgent action to prevent irreversible environmental impact.
