The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Gilgit-Baltistan Police, operating under Pakistan's jurisdiction, has apprehended two individuals suspected of drug trafficking near Karakoram International University (KIU). According to the Pamir Times, 400 grams of hashish and 31 grams of crystal methamphetamine, colloquially known as 'ice,' were confiscated and are now subject to legal procedures.

The arrests put a spotlight on the persistent challenge of drug abuse plaguing educational institutions. Pakistani media outlets have continuously raised alarms, pointing to the surge in drug usage tied to the deterioration of law and order, accessible illegal substances, rampant poverty, and scarce employment opportunities. A report by Dawn titled "Drug Abuse and Campuses" previously warned of the escalating issue, stressing the urgency of societal acknowledgment and immediate action.

Youth in Pakistan faces immense stress from academic and career pressures, contributing to a rise in recreational drug use as a means of coping. This scenario, exacerbated by the proximity of drugs to educational campuses, underscores a critical failure on the part of law enforcement. The report urges government authorities to implement stringent measures and advises parental vigilance in educating the youth about the risks associated with drug addiction.
