Sikyong Penpa Tsering, leader of the Central Tibetan Administration, has appealed to Tibetans in exile to cultivate a deeper historical awareness of Tibet and its contemporary challenges. Speaking in Kalimpong, Tsering underscored the significance of understanding Tibet's geopolitical role, including its strategic rivers and environmental concerns, to strengthen ties to their homeland.
In his address to students, Tsering highlighted Tibet's historical role in shaping efforts for autonomy, urging the cultivation of cultural heritage to combat identity erosion. He visited vital Tibetan institutions, acknowledging the community's resilience and the pivotal roles of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru in establishing Tibetan establishments in India.
Tsering elaborated on the middle way approach, aimed at preserving Tibetan culture under Chinese governance through peaceful dialogues. He expressed worry over China's increased restrictions, affecting family ties and religious institutions abroad. He identified potential advocacy opportunities amid China's weakened post-pandemic economy and called for alliances with other pro-democracy movements.
