Pakistan's opposition parties have launched a vehement attack on the central government following a surprising hike in petroleum prices, contrary to market predictions. As reported by Geo News, the government announced a petrol price increase of PKR 1.35 per litre, effective immediately and lasting until November 15. The decision has raised petrol costs to PKR 248.38 per litre.
This move has sparked outrage among opposition figures, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan-Tehreek-I-Insaaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami. Jamaat-e-Islami's Emir, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, labeled the price rise 'shameful' and accused the government of neglecting public welfare and ignoring industrial sector needs.
Critics argue that with global petroleum prices declining, Pakistan's increases seem unjustified. The raised cost of high-speed diesel, a crucial component for the transport sector, further compounds inflation issues, affecting food prices due to its role in goods transport. Meanwhile, kerosene and light diesel prices saw slight reductions, offering minimal relief to consumers. The opposition calls upon the government to alleviate the financial strain on citizens.
