In a crucial gathering titled 'Societal Resistance Against the Surge in Extremism and Radicalization in Sindh' at Szabist University, activists voiced grave concerns over the increasing extrajudicial killings linked to blasphemy allegations. They highlighted the growing sway of extremist factions in Sindh, emphasizing the state's seeming unpreparedness and lack of accountability.
Dr. Riaz Shaikh, Szabist's Faculty of Social Sciences dean, addressed the troubling rise of lynchings and extrajudicial killing incidents, with reports from Dawn underlining governmental inaction. Criticizing the state's ambivalence, he referred to the unaccountability surrounding the murder of blasphemy suspect Dr. Shahnawaz Kunbhar.
Rights advocate Sadia Baloch traced the extremism roots to historical conflicts, pointing out the pervasive influence in Sindh, while noting state pressure on protestors. Penning ardent criticism, Noorul Huda Shah and lawyer Rumasa Javed called out inadequate governmental and judicial responses. Sindh Human Rights Commission's Iqbal Detho stressed democratic rule of law as pivotal in averting such tragedies. Despite the challenges, optimism surrounds the youth's potential for fostering positive change.
