Members of the European Parliament have warned that China's hostile approach toward Taiwan could backfire, further alienating the Taiwanese populace. Speaking in Taipei, MEP Michael Gahler compared China's tactics to Russia's actions in Ukraine, which shifted perceptions among Ukrainians.
Gahler, leading the European Taiwan Friendship Group delegation, highlighted the transformation in Ukrainian national identity following Russian aggression, suggesting a similar effect might occur in Taiwan due to China's pressure. French MEP Bernard Guetta reinforced this view, emphasizing Taiwan's emerging national identity amid Beijing's hostility.
The delegation underscored the European Parliament's recent resolution rejecting China's interpretation of U.N. Resolution 2758, advocating for Taiwan's international engagement. Discussions with Taiwanese officials focused on enhancing EU-Taiwan economic cooperation, with an emphasis on semiconductors and artificial intelligence, areas ripe for collaboration.
