The trial of celebrated French actor Gerard Depardieu, charged with sexual assault, commenced in Paris on Monday amidst notable absence due to health concerns. The 75-year-old actor's lawyer, Jeremie Assous, cited his client's fragile health condition as the reason for his nonappearance and sought a postponement of six months, according to reports.

Assous, appearing at the courthouse, stated, "Unfortunately, his doctors have forbidden him from appearing here today." He highlighted the complexity of the case, riddled with numerous complaints, potentially leading to another trial. Depardieu, a significant figure in France's #MeToo movement, is alleged to have committed the offenses during a 2021 film production.

Accusations against Depardieu include inappropriate touching of a woman involved in the film shoot, with several witnesses corroborating the complaint. The actor also reportedly groped a second woman on set and in public. One plaintiff, a set dresser, accused him of further misconduct during director Jean Becker's film 'Les Volet Verts'. If found guilty, Depardieu might face a five-year jail term and a substantial fine, as per ANI reports.
