Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized the importance of developing a partner country model at the BRICS summit. He noted this concept as a key focus, supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin's discussions around its guidelines and modalities.
Misri addressed the media, explaining, "We're not merely considering expanding BRICS but specifically focusing on how to implement a partner country model within the group. This remains a core agenda for the current summit." He outlined that leaders would delve into political, economic, trade, and cultural relations, without predicting summit outcomes prematurely.
He further noted discussions between Modi and Putin around BRICS membership and the partner country model as ongoing and unresolved. The 16th BRICS Summit, under Russia's chair in Kazan, marks Modi's second Russia visit this year, following a July summit. Since its inception in 2006, BRICS has grown, most recently adding five new members in 2024.
