The Pandemic Fund, in its latest financial endeavor, concluded its second funding round with the approval of $418 million worth of grants. These funds aim to enhance pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response capabilities across 40 nations spanning six regions, particularly focusing on disease surveillance, laboratory modernization, and healthcare workforce development.

This recent allocation complements the $128.89 million sanctioned in September for urgent projects addressing the mpox Public Health Emergency. This brings the total funding of the second round to $547 million, expected to trigger an additional $4 billion investment in pandemic preparedness and response across beneficiary countries. Notably, over half the grants target sub-Saharan Africa, the area with pressing demands.

With over 74 percent of the projects aiding low-income countries, these initiatives underline the Pandemic Fund's objective to galvanize dedicated resources for pandemic preparedness while encouraging nations to boost their own investments. Co-Chairs Chatib Basri and Sabin Nsanzimana praised the transparent selection process, urging global leaders to recapitalize the fund to maintain and expand its critical initiatives. To date, the Pandemic Fund has disbursed $885 million, generating $6 billion in support to 75 countries, with substantial focus on lower-income regions.
