India and ASEAN countries have acknowledged the vital role digital public infrastructure (DPI) plays in the transformation and promotion of inclusivity, efficiency, and innovation, strengthening their commitment to the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This was formally recognized through a joint statement released after the 21st ASEAN-India summit held in Vientiane, Laos.
The statement highlighted both regions' recognition of the technology essential for bridging existing digital divides and accelerating progress towards inclusive and sustainable development while boosting economic integration. ASEAN countries lauded India's contributions to the 'ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025' and the planned establishment of Centres of Excellence in Software Development and Training in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
ASEAN and India aim to share knowledge, experiences, and practices in DPI development via platforms enhancing education, healthcare, agriculture, and climate action. They also see FinTech innovations as crucial to bilateral economic partnerships, potentially linking ASEAN and Indian payment systems. In cybersecurity, the ASEAN India Track 1 Cyber Policy Dialogue will expand digital economy support, while AI collaborations will enhance skills, infrastructure, and risk management.
Existing frameworks, such as the ASEAN India Digital Ministers' Meeting, will facilitate exchanges, workshops, and training to propel digital transformation. The forthcoming 'ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2026-2030' aims to advance digital progress by 2030, aligning with ASEAN Community Vision 2045's objectives.
