Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a pivotal two-day visit to Laos early Thursday, participating in the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit. This visit, at the invitation of Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, underscores India's determination to solidify its strategic ties with Southeast Asian nations.

Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East), Jaideep Mazumdar, highlighted India's commitment to ASEAN mechanisms. He noted the significance of the meetings in shaping the future of India-ASEAN relations. During a briefing, Mazumdar emphasized, "Prime Minister Modi will be in Vientiane for vital discussions, marking his tenth attendance at the ASEAN-India Summit."

This year's summit coincides with the tenth anniversary of the Act East policy, focusing heavily on the themes of connectivity and resilience. The initiative aims to enhance India's engagement with ASEAN, which is home to a significant portion of the Indian diaspora and serves as a critical trade partner. Discussions at the East Asia Summit will address regional stability and economic prosperity.

On the bilateral front, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to meet Lao PDR's Prime Minister to reinforce historic ties. The visit also includes talks on the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative, with nations such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore partnering in this strategic effort. The revival of Bihar's Nalanda University, another East Asia Summit project, is also on the agenda.
