In a significant reversal, the Brazilian Supreme Court has lifted restrictions on Elon Musk's social media platform, X, after the company faced legal trouble over disinformation allegations. The decision, reported by Al Jazeera, follows millions of dollars in fines that X paid for disregarding multiple court directives.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over the case, tasked the Brazilian communications authority with restoring access to the platform within 24 hours of the ruling. Notably, Elon Musk, known for his vocal advocacy of free speech, has not commented on this legal development.
Initially, Judge de Moraes had imposed a ban on the platform when Musk failed to remove accounts allegedly spreading false information. Furthermore, X defaulted on appointing a legal representative in Brazil. Controversially, Musk described de Moraes as an 'evil dictator' following the shutdown decision, while expressing sympathy towards supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil's former right-wing leader.
