In a move to address the demands of its Hindu minority, the Bangladesh government has officially extended the holiday period for the Durga Pooja festivities. The announcement was made by Abul Kalam Azad, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. The decision follows the country's recent turbulence after violent protests and targeted attacks on minorities post the August political shift.
Representing about 9% of the nation's population, the Hindu community had issued an eight-point demand, resulting in an additional public holiday. Traditionally offering just one day, the government has now sanctioned two consecutive public holidays, totaling four days of celebrations with the weekend. Azad confirmed that the executive order would be enacted shortly.
As Dhaka prepares for the celebrations, residents express optimism about the puja. Authorities assured public safety, with security coordination visible across various levels. The army chiefs have communicated stringent measures down to local law enforcement to maintain order. Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus emphasized human rights beyond religious identities in his recent appeal for unity amidst the nation's democratic journey.
