Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) narrowly avoided a major accident when an engine malfunction led to the burst of all its tyres while aborting take-off from Dubai International Airport. Carrying 172 passengers bound for Multan, all aboard were evacuated safely, as reported by Ary News.
The Airbus A320 accelerated down the runway when an engine malfunction warning triggered the captain to deploy the emergency brake system, causing the aircraft to halt but also resulting in blown tyres. PIA's engineering team was dispatched from Karachi to Dubai to address the technical fault. Affected passengers were rescheduled on other flights, including PIA flight PK 204 to Lahore and another from Sharjah to Multan.
Financially struggling PIA, burdened with a USD 2.9 billion debt, has long been under government scrutiny for privatization. Despite recent bailout packages, six bidders are pre-qualified for the airline's sale. However, delays and deadline extensions for privatization deposits, the latest until October 1, could further complicate the process. IMF recommendations advise the sale of loss-making state enterprises to bolster Pakistan's economy. PIA's recent incidents challenge the airline's ability to regain trust during its financial turbulence.
