Nepal Declares Three-Day Mourning Amid Catastrophic Rain-Induced Disaster

Nepal's cabinet, led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, has announced a three-day national mourning following severe rain-induced disasters. The government will provide financial aid to the victims' families and continues its extensive rescue operations. Over 200 have died, with thousands more affected.

Nepal's cabinet, headed by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, has declared a three-day national mourning period in response to the devastating rain-induced disaster that began on Saturday. The meeting took place at Oli's residence in Baluwatar, where it was also decided to issue Nepali Rupees (NRs) 2 Lakhs to the families of those killed, announced Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithivi Subba Gurung.

Prime Minister Oli and other ministers will contribute one month's salary to the PM relief fund, which is aimed at aiding the victims and deceased. According to Gurung, the government will also provide financial assistance to the next of kin of those deemed missing for more than 10 days. So far, 209 people have died as a result of the severe flooding and landslides since the heavy rains began, as confirmed till Monday evening.

Authorities have reported 142 injuries among those who have been rescued from the flood-affected areas. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with helicopters airlifting over 294 individuals from severely impacted districts such as Kavre, Lalitpur, and Sindhuli. In total, 4,222 people have been rescued from regions affected by floods and landslides. Authorities are continuing to coordinate efforts to provide relief and support to the disaster-stricken communities.
