Senior Pakistani politician Fazlur Rehman has emphasized the necessity of consensus among political parties before introducing constitutional amendments, to prevent political instability. The leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan-Fazlur (JUI-F) made these remarks according to a Dawn report.
Rehman opposed amendments to the constitution aimed at benefiting specific individuals or increasing the powers of the security forces at the expense of fundamental rights. He criticized the Punjab provincial government for blocking a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rally, calling it undemocratic and narrow-minded.
Rehman also supported the establishment of a Constitutional Court in Pakistan, an idea that surfaced in 2006. The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has finalized its own draft for constitutional amendments and plans to consult further with JUI-F. PPP's Nayyar Hussain Bukhari confirmed ongoing discussions with Rehman, stressing the need for government cooperation to pass the amendments.
