French President Emmanuel Macron has thrown his weight behind India's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). His endorsement came during his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), emphasizing the need for comprehensive reforms to enhance the UN's representativeness and effectiveness.
Macron articulated the challenges faced due to the current structure of the Security Council, which he described as being 'blocked reciprocally' by the interests of its members. He argued for expanding the council to include nations like Germany, Japan, India, and Brazil, as well as two African countries. 'So let's simply make the UN more effective, first and foremost by making it more representative,' Macron stated.
India's long-standing ambition for a permanent UNSC seat has received increasing international support, aiming to better represent developing nations. The UNSC currently includes five permanent members—China, the UK, France, Russia, and the US—alongside ten non-permanent members elected for two years. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called for reforms in global institutions, emphasizing sustainable development and human-centric approaches in his address at the 'Summit of the Future.'
