Since gaining independence in 1991, Kazakhstan has pursued a peaceful and balanced foreign policy, demonstrating a strong commitment to multilateral cooperation as outlined by the UN Charter. According to a press release from the Kazakhstan Embassy in India, the nation has significantly contributed to international security and stability through various initiatives.

In the 1990s, Kazakhstan voluntarily renounced its nuclear arsenal, transferring warheads and materials to Russia and dismantling delivery systems under international supervision. The closure of the Semipalatinsk test site marked a pivotal commitment to nuclear disarmament. Kazakhstan played a leading role in forming the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (CANWFZ), which took effect in 2009. The UN General Assembly endorsed Kazakhstan's efforts by designating August 29 as the 'International Day Against Nuclear Tests' in 2009 and adopting the Universal Declaration for the Achievement of a Nuclear-Weapons-Free World in 2015.

Kazakhstan provides a neutral platform for conflict resolution, hosting talks between Iran and the P5+1 in 2013 and facilitating the Astana talks on Syria. It has also promoted peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, hosting negotiations in May and September 2024. Additionally, Kazakhstan initiated regional organizations like the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and the Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS) to enhance peace and cooperation. Kazakhstan's contributions to global humanitarian efforts and participation in UN peacekeeping missions further underline its commitment to a peaceful world.
