Protests erupted outside Muhammad Yunus' hotel in New York as he arrived to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session. Yunus, Chief Advisor of Bangladesh's interim government, avoided responding to questions from the Indian media contingent. Video footage showed his security personnel trying to keep reporters at bay.
Chanting 'Go Back' slogans, protesters criticized Yunus for allegedly taking power unconstitutionally and conducting attacks on minorities. Demonstrators brandished posters reading 'Sheikh Hasina Our Prime Minister' and accused Yunus of 'dirty politics.'
Yunus was sworn in as head of Bangladesh's interim government after Sheikh Hasina fled the country. Protesters claim he achieved this through unconstitutional means. Yunus is scheduled for several high-profile meetings, including with US President Joe Biden and leaders from various countries, during the UNGA session. He will also attend events related to Bangladesh's 50th anniversary of UN membership.
