New York [US], September 24 (ANI): Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of Bangladesh's interim government, who arrived for the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), faced protests outside his hotel in New York on Monday night. When approached by the Indian media, Yunus avoided responding, with his security team keeping reporters at bay.

Protesters chanted 'Go Back' slogans and criticized Yunus for alleged attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. They held posters supporting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, alleging Yunus's rise to power was steeped in 'dirty politics' and unconstitutional actions.

Yunus, 84, assumed office as head of the interim government on August 8, following the dissolution of parliament and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's departure. Protesters accused Yunus of forcibly taking power and executing violent campaigns against minorities. Dr. Rahman and DM Ronald, among others, voiced demands for peace and secular democracy.

Yunus is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 27 and has a series of high-profile meetings lined up, including discussions with US President Joe Biden and the leaders of multiple nations. He will also participate in events addressing the Rohingya crisis and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's UN membership. Additionally, Yunus will meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain recently discussed bilateral ties with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New York.
