External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday described the India-China relationship as 'complex,' highlighting long-standing trade issues and calling the economic relationship 'unfair and imbalanced.' His remarks came during a conversation with Ambassador Jean-David Levitte at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.

Jaishankar said the relationship between the two nations has had 'bad periods in history.' He pointed out that both countries, with populations exceeding a billion, have a significant ripple effect on each other due to their proximity. He recalled the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which violated multiple agreements, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue.

The EAM noted progress in resolving border disputes, with 75% of disengagement issues settled, but said challenges remain. India and China recently agreed to uphold peace in border areas and intensify contact through diplomatic and military channels. Jaishankar also called attention to difficulties in other sectors, including technology, telecom, and digital trade.

During his visit to Geneva, Jaishankar will meet with Switzerland's Foreign Minister to review bilateral ties. He arrived in Switzerland after visiting Germany and Saudi Arabia, where he also held key diplomatic meetings.
