Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator and former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Hamid Khan, has issued a stern warning that the legal community will protest any efforts to curtail the judiciary's powers, according to Dawn.
Speaking at a press conference at the Lahore High Court Bar Association on Wednesday, Khan raised alarms, alleging the Pakistani government seems to be trying to limit judicial authority. He was also surprised by rumors of a 'constitutional package.'
Khan noted that such packages usually undergo extensive parliamentary debate worldwide, accusing the Pakistan parliament of not fulfilling its role. He expressed disappointment over the unimplemented Supreme Court decision on reserved seats, calling it contempt of court. Khan warned against establishing parallel courts and stressed that new judicial appointments would face resistance.
He condemned the abolition of contempt of court law, attributing it to forces aiming to disregard judicial rulings. Insaf Lawyers' Forum President, Ishtiaq A Khan, criticized Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa for not addressing new constitutional amendments, alleging the extension of his term is part of a 'London plan,' as reported by Dawn.
