French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed former chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as the new Prime Minister of France, the Elysee Palace announced on Thursday. Barnier's appointment aims to bring stability to the country's ongoing political chaos.

The nomination follows an unprecedented cycle of consultations. 'In view of his constitutional duty, the president ensured that the prime minister and his government will have the most stable conditions possible and be able to unite more widely,' the Elysee Palace stated, according to Politico. Barnier has an established political career, having served as the head of the Brexit task force since 2016, and previously held various ministerial and European commissioner roles.

Barnier's challenge is to form a stable government amidst a deeply divided legislature. Snap elections this summer resulted in a hung parliament, with the New Popular Front winning the most seats but falling short of a majority. Macron had rejected their prime minister candidate, Lucie Castets, citing her lack of experience. Barnier emerged as the frontrunner late Wednesday, hours before his official nomination. (ANI)
