The United States has sanctioned 10 Russian individuals and two entities in response to alleged efforts to manipulate the 2024 presidential election, the Treasury Department announced Wednesday. This measure is part of a coordinated US government response to counter what it describes as Russian malign influence targeting American public opinion.

The sanctions come alongside criminal charges against two employees of the Russian state-sponsored media network RT. The indictment accuses them of money laundering and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed these charges, emphasizing the US commitment to counteract foreign interference.

The US claims that Russian state-sponsored actors have utilized tools like AI-generated deep fakes and disinformation to undermine trust in electoral processes. Starting early 2024, RT allegedly tried to covertly recruit American influencers through a front company to disguise Russian involvement, according to the Treasury Department.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated that the actions highlight the Biden administration's efforts to hold state-sponsored actors accountable for attempting to erode public trust. "Treasury will not waver in our commitment to safeguarding democratic principles and the integrity of our election systems," Yellen affirmed.

In a White House briefing, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby indicated that President Vladimir Putin was likely aware of RT's activities. "We believe Putin is weighing in on these actions," Kirby noted.

The State Department also introduced a visa restriction policy for individuals working on behalf of Kremlin-supported media, labeling six RT affiliates operating in the US as "foreign missions," and offering a $10 million reward for information on foreign election interference.

US intelligence agencies have previously assessed that Russia seeks to interfere in the upcoming election, identifying RT as a significant source of propaganda and disinformation.
