Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. The new chancery complex, which blends traditional Indian motifs with contemporary design, aims to embody Indianness through the use of elegant claddings and durable Kota stones, creating a tranquil and inviting atmosphere.

During the inauguration, PM Modi lit a ceremonial lamp, unveiled a plaque, and interacted with members of the Indian community. He acknowledged their contributions as a living bridge between India and Brunei, reinforcing the bilateral relationship that began in the 1920s with the arrival of Indian workers following the discovery of oil in Brunei.

Currently, approximately 14,000 Indians reside in Brunei, significantly contributing to its healthcare and education sectors. PM Modi's visit underscores the importance of strong bilateral ties, particularly in commercial and cultural linkages. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome by Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah at the airport and expressed his gratitude via a social media post.

The Prime Minister was warmly received by the Indian diaspora and had an endearing interaction with a girl who presented him with a painting featuring the Tricolour. The visit aligns with India's 'Act East' Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision, marking the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister and coinciding with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei.

PM Modi's visit to Brunei will include bilateral discussions aimed at exploring new areas of collaboration. Following this, he will proceed to Singapore on a two-nation visit scheduled for September 4 and 5.
