Amid rising tensions in the South China Sea, the United States condemned China's aggressive actions towards the Philippines. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller voiced strong support for Philippine allies, criticizing the People's Republic of China (PRC) for its 'dangerous and escalatory actions' targeting lawful Philippine maritime operations near Sabina Shoal.

This condemnation follows accusations of ships ramming each other from both countries. On August 29, 2024, the Philippine Coast Guard claimed a Chinese vessel deliberately rammed one of its ships three times near Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands—an area hotly contested by multiple nations, including China and the Philippines.

The South China Sea dispute, rooted in conflicting territorial claims, has seen recent intensification. The Philippines asserts its rights based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), whereas China stakes broad claims marked by its 'nine-dash line.' Despite an international tribunal ruling in favor of the Philippines in 2016, China dismissed the decision and continued its assertive actions. Rising incidents, including harassment and aggressive maritime maneuvers, underscore the high-stakes conflict that has drawn global concern and diplomatic friction.
