On Monday, Tropical Storm Yagi wreaked havoc in the Philippines, claiming 11 lives as it brought heavy rains, floods, and landslides, according to Al Jazeera. This calamity underscores the regular occurrence of storms and typhoons in the Philippines from late June to October, which lead to extensive destruction annually.

Late Sunday night, Storm Yagi advanced past the Bicol region, southeast of the capital, and was anticipated to make landfall on the northeast coast of Luzon by Monday. Preventive actions included shutting down schools and government offices across Manila and suspending ferry services in affected regions. Additionally, 29 domestic flights were canceled, reported Al Jazeera.

Amidst the chaos, over 300 residents remained in evacuation camps as of Monday. Local officials noted that the floodwaters in the city, housing 210,000 people, were slow to recede due to high tides. In a related development, separate landslides in Cebu claimed two lives and destroyed five houses on Sunday, according to Al Jazeera. In July, Typhoon Gaemi caused significant flooding and claimed at least 22 lives, highlighting the frequent nature of such disasters in the region. (ANI)
