Tensions in the West Philippine Sea escalated as the Philippines reported that one of its coast guard vessels was rammed and another subjected to 'aggressive maneuvers' by Chinese coast guard ships, according to local media on Monday.

National Security Council spokesperson Jonathan Malaya, cited by the Philippine Inquirer, stated that the Philippines' vessels, BRP Cape Engano and BRP Bacagay, had a confrontation with Chinese coast guard ships at Escoda (Sabina) Shoal early Monday morning.

The Philippine ships were en route to deliver supplies to Lawak and Patag islands when they were involved in the altercation, which began around 3:24 a.m. Despite the aggressive actions, both Philippine vessels are determined to complete their mission, Malaya affirmed.

China responded by accusing the Philippine coast guard of ignoring warnings and endangering a Chinese vessel on duty, reported Xinhua. According to a Chinese Coast Guard spokesperson, a Philippine vessel caused a scrape with a Chinese ship and later intruded into waters claimed by China.

This incident follows a slew of confrontations in the contested region, including an August 11 denouncement by the Philippines of Chinese actions against its aircraft. The Philippine Armed Forces described the behavior of China's People's Liberation Army Air Force as 'dangerous and provocative' during recent patrols.

Military tensions have been heightened in the region, with simultaneous drills conducted by China and a coalition of U.S., Australian, Canadian, and Philippine forces earlier this month. In April, the Philippines also accused China of using water cannons against its vessels near Scarborough Shoal.
