Yunus and Modi Discuss Stability and Security at Global South Summit

Muhammad Yunus and PM Modi participated in the third Voice of Global South Summit, addressing issues like geopolitical challenges, climate change, and the situation in Bangladesh. Modi reaffirmed India's support for a democratic and peaceful Bangladesh. Safety of minorities was a key discussion point.

Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the Bangladesh government, participated in the third Voice of Global South Summit, discussing geopolitical challenges, climate change, and the situation in Bangladesh. He highlighted these issues during a press conference after the summit, hosted by India and held virtually.

When queried, Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar refrained from commenting on Yunus' specific remarks but noted Yunus began by greeting the Prime Minister and India on its Independence Day. Yunus addressed the subjects of geopolitical challenges, climate change, and the situation in Bangladesh. Jaishankar emphasized that many leaders spoke about their national circumstances in addition to global issues.

Bangladesh has witnessed violent protests leading to reports of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from the country. Attacks on minorities have been reported, with assurances from authorities regarding their protection. During a phone call on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh. Both leaders prioritized the safety and security of minority communities.

Modi and Yunus discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations, aligning with their national priorities. The Global South Summit, an extension of PM Modi's vision of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas,' symbolizes India's philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. The summit aims to unite Global South countries to share perspectives and priorities on various issues through a common platform. India hosted the first and second Voice of Global South Summits earlier in 2023, both in a virtual format.
