External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced on Saturday that participating countries at the third Voice of Global South Summit emphasized the necessity of returning to a ceasefire and negotiations regarding the Gaza situation. The summit, held virtually, also touched upon the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Jaishankar expressed concern over the civilian casualties resulting from the Israel-Hamas war. The summit featured more frequent references to Gaza than to Ukraine, focusing on the civilian toll and urging for an end to hostilities.
In addition to the ceasefire sentiment, there is a growing call for UN reforms, with countries urged to propose their ideas for text-based negotiations. The summit saw participation from 123 countries, featuring 21 heads of state, 118 ministers, and 34 foreign ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the summit's theme of empowering the Global South for a sustainable future, aligning with his broader vision of global cooperation.
