President Droupadi Murmu, currently on a three-nation tour, offered prayers at the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple in Nadi, Fiji, on Wednesday morning. Earlier, she addressed the Indian community in Fiji, highlighting the enduring relationship between India and Fiji and lauding the Indian diaspora's global impact.
During her address, President Murmu expressed her pleasure in meeting members of the Indian community abroad. She emphasized the special bond shared between India and Fiji, dating back 145 years, and appreciated the Indian government's initiative to launch Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to strengthen ties with the diaspora.
Murmu underscored India's leadership on the global stage, citing the G-20 Presidency's success as proof of India's inclusive and decisive leadership. She highlighted India's commitment to representing the Global South and building a fair and secure world for future generations. Murmu also thanked the Fiji government for recognizing the contributions of Girmits and their descendants.
President Murmu departed New Delhi on Sunday for a six-day visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste. In New Zealand, she will meet with Governor General Cindy Kiro, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, and address an education conference.
In Timor Leste, Murmu's visit marks the first head-of-state-level visit from India. She will meet President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
The visit underscores India's commitment to bilateral relations and its Act East Policy, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014.
