A Pakistani national with purported connections to the Iranian government has been charged with orchestrating political assassinations in the United States, targeting high-profile government officials including former President Donald Trump. According to court documents unsealed Tuesday, the suspect, identified as Asif Merchant, is currently in federal custody in New York.

The federal complaint, disclosed in Brooklyn, accuses 46-year-old Merchant, also known as "Asif Raza Merchant," of murder-for-hire in a foiled plot aiming at top US officials. Details reveal that Merchant aimed to assassinate government personnel on American soil, a plan that was thwarted by undercover FBI agents who posed as hitmen.

FBI Acting Assistant Director Christie Curtis emphasized the intricate work by agents across New York, Houston, and Dallas, celebrating the prevention of a significant threat to national security. US Attorney Breon Peace highlighted the Justice Department's firm stance against foreign threats targeting US officials and citizens. Merchant faces serious charges as law enforcement enhances security protections for current and former government officials.
