President Droupadi Murmu was warmly received by her Fijian counterpart, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, on Tuesday at the State House in Suva. Both leaders discussed avenues to strengthen India-Fiji relations.
President Murmu, on an official visit to Fiji, was given a traditional ceremonial welcome. Upon her arrival, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka welcomed her at the airport, marking the beginning of her tour.
Embarking on August 5 for her three-day visit to Fiji, President Murmu's trip represents the first-ever visit by an Indian Head of State to Fiji. This move aims to bolster historical ties and aligns with India's Act East Policy. Murmu will address the Fijian Parliament and meet with the Indian diaspora.
Next, President Murmu travels to New Zealand from August 7-9, invited by Governor General Cindy Kiro. She will hold bilateral meetings with Kiro and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, address an education conference, and engage with the Indian community.
In the final leg, Murmu visits Timor-Leste at President Jose Ramos-Horta's invitation. On August 10, she will hold discussions with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. This visit, like her stops in Fiji and New Zealand, reflects India's diplomatic strategy under the Act East Policy.
President Murmu's journey underscores India's commitment to deepening bilateral relations with these nations. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, the Act East Policy continues to guide India's regional engagement strategies.
