In a significant diplomatic gesture, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla extended India's support for Togo's socio-economic development on Friday, while welcoming a high-level Togolese delegation.

The delegation, comprising ministers, parliamentarians, constitutional court judges, and advisors, met with Birla at Parliament House. Emphasizing India's long-standing commitment to democratic principles, Birla assured continued support for Togo's transition to a parliamentary democratic system.

Reflecting on India's own journey since 1947, Birla highlighted the meticulous process of drafting the Indian Constitution and its guiding principles. Praising the robust committee system in Indian Parliament, Birla commended the high esteem in which committee reports are held. He expressed hope that Togo's new constitution would empower its Parliament.

Birla underscored India's socio-economic progress under parliamentary democracy over the past 75 years, describing parliaments as the embodiment of public welfare. He also lauded the ongoing training programme at PRIDE for Togolese ministers, MPs, and judges, inviting their feedback to enhance future sessions.

Birla reiterated India's readiness to offer further training and capacity-building programs following Togo's constitutional reforms. Togolese Minister Gilbert Bawara expressed gratitude, highlighting the invaluable insights gained during the training and India's backing of the African Union's inclusion in the G20.
