A street in Abu Dhabi has been named after Dr. George Matthew, a doctor with Indian roots based in Al Ain, in recognition of his substantial contributions to the UAE's healthcare sector. This tribute falls under the 'Honoring UAE's Visionaries: Commemorative Streets' project by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), aimed at honoring individuals who have significantly contributed to the nation's development.

Dr. George Matthew is celebrated with the naming of a road near Sheikh Shakbooth Medical City in Al Mafraq as George Matthew Street. Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Matthew said, 'When I first came to the UAE, the infrastructure was still developing. Inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, I dedicated myself to serving the people. I am deeply honored by this recognition.'

Arriving in the UAE in 1967 at the age of 26, Dr. Matthew initially planned to move to the US but stayed after being captivated by a friend's descriptions of Al Ain. He successfully applied to become Al Ain's first government doctor, opening the first clinic with Sheikh Zayed's blessing. Affectionately nicknamed 'Matyous' by locals, he played a pivotal role in the evolution of modern medicine in the UAE.

Over the years, Dr. Matthew has occupied several key positions, including Medical Director of Al Ain Region in 1972 and Health Authority Consultant in 2001. His efforts have significantly advanced the UAE's healthcare services, introducing a modern medical culture. Additionally, he pursued studies in England and Harvard to deepen his expertise in tropical diseases and hospital management. Dr. Matthew has been instrumental in educating healthcare professionals, earning the community's trust and admiration.

A trusted medical advisor for the royal family, including the late Sheikh Tahnoon bin Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Dr. Matthew expressed, 'It was a privilege to serve under His Highness for 57 years. This recognition is a testament to that invaluable relationship.'

Celebrating his service, the UAE granted citizenship to Dr. Matthew and his family ten years ago. Even at 86, he continues to work in the Private Health department with Dr. Abdul Rahim Jaafar, another prominent healthcare expert. 'I am ready to serve the country and its citizens for as long as I live. I pray for the strength to continue my work,' Dr. Matthew proclaimed.

Originally from Thumpamon in Kerala, India, Dr. Matthew graduated with an MBBS from Trivandrum Medical College in 1963. After his marriage, he and his wife, Valsa, moved to the UAE and began their remarkable journey together. (ANI)
