A viral video about "fake plastic eggs" has taken social media by storm. The video which explains how plastic eggs are made is being repeatedly shared on Whatsapp and Facebook.

However, this is not the first time that the case has come to light. In 2017, there were reports from Kolkata and Bengaluru that fake plastic eggs are being circulated in the market. But can it be true?

Fake plastic eggs are reportedly being made with the help of Sodium Alginate, Gelatine and natural edible colours.

The video left India's poultry-loving community in shock and it was eventually followed by a number of tests. The controversy even got to Goa Assembly in 2018 when Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo brought three eggs in a packet and held it up on the House floor as evidence that “fake plastic eggs” were being sold in the market.

When MLA Reginaldo brought the fake eggs issue to Goa Assembly, then CM Manohar Parrikar has refuted the claims but eventually got the samples tested. Parrikar had tabled a report by state FDA the same evening which said that the egg alleged to be a “plastic egg” had tested negative.

West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences had also refuted the "fake plastic eggs" controversy that bulged in Bengal.

But there are some reports that suggest that the "fake plastic eggs" claim might actually be true. So here we list out some tips to identify fake eggs to make sure you and your loved ones are safe.

  • Fake plastic eggs usually have a shinier shell whereas a real fresh egg will be slightly dull in colour
  • Fake eggs also have a rubber coating inside
  • Yolk of fake plastic eggs will quickly dissolve with the egg white automatically even if you stir it.
  • Fake eggs will make sounds when you shake it but not the real egg.
  • If you burn a fake egg it will emit smoke and smell like that of plastic when it's burned.
  • Fake eggs will fail the water test. When you drop a fake egg in water it'll float and not sink like a real egg.
