A traumatic incident unfolded at a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in Jasper, a quaint town in Georgia's Blue Ridge mountain region, when a gunman opened fire on Tuesday. Authorities confirmed the assailant was shot dead, while a VA employee was airlifted to a hospital.
Jasper police responded promptly at about 1:30 p.m., confronting the gunman outside the clinic, according to reports. Jasper's Police Chief, Matt Dawkins, noted that the gunman hailed from the area, but details remain scarce. Witnesses, including Jimmy Mooney, described chaotic scenes, with gunfire echoing while they were evacuated from a nearby store.
The FBI and Georgia Bureau of Investigation have taken the lead on the investigation. The clinic, serving Jasper and neighboring communities, remains closed as the VA ensures staff and veterans receive necessary support. This new facility had only opened in 2020 to provide vital healthcare services for local veterans.
