In a significant step toward eliminating tuberculosis (TB), AI-driven handheld X-ray tools are now being deployed across India to screen vulnerable groups, as part of the 100-day 'TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan'. State Minister for Health, Anupriya Patel, reported this initiative to the Lok Sabha on Friday.
Patel's written reply outlined the government's strategy, which includes adopting AI tools validated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for chest X-ray analysis and Line Probe Assay (LPA) interpretation. The DeepCXR tool is particularly highlighted for its role in automating the reading of chest X-rays and facilitating LPA result management.
To date, this technology has been deployed in eight states and Union Territories and is integral to the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP). Launched on December 7, 2024, across 347 priority districts, the initiative also aims to bolster resources by procuring these X-ray tools for central distribution in high-burden areas.
