In a significant stride towards self-reliance in medical technology, India has unveiled its first indigenous MRI scanner, poised to be installed at AIIMS-Delhi by October. This cutting-edge 1.5 Tesla scanner marks an important milestone, aiming to substantially reduce cost barriers and dependency on imported machines for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the installation was signed between AIIMS-Delhi and the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), an organization under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This collaboration signifies a pivotal effort in enhancing the accessibility of advanced healthcare technology to the broader Indian population.
AIIMS-Delhi Director, Dr. M Srinivas, highlighted that the indigenous MRI machine is a crucial step towards the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. As India moves to validate its MRI scanners, the health ministry works on drafting norms for their clearance in clinical and human trials. This innovation promises to lower MRI scan costs by approximately 50%, heralding a new era in affordable diagnostics.
