In a significant development, more than 400 healthcare workers in the Sabarkantha district of Gujarat were terminated on Tuesday after failing to return from an indefinite strike in Gandhinagar. The movement persists despite official warnings and negotiations.
The dismissed employees, mainly from sub-centres and primary health centres, continue to demand inclusion in technical cadres, revision of grade pays, and the cancellation of departmental examinations. Chief District Health Officer Dr. Raj Sutariya confirmed that 116 workers resumed duty, while 406 faced termination. An inquiry has been launched against 55 supervisors, emphasizing the administration's tough stand.
The Congress party has extended its support to the protesters, denouncing the government's actions as akin to colonial practices. The healthcare workers argue that their grievances have been repeatedly ignored despite contributing significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
